A Mighty Fortress is our God

Reformation Sunday Hymn

1. A mighty Fortress is our God,

A Bulwark never failing;

Our Helper He amid the flood

Of mortal ills prevailing:

For still our ancient foe

Doth seek to work us woe;

His craft and power are great,

And, armed with cruel hate,

On earth is not his equal.

2. Did we in our own strength confide,

Our striving would be losing;

Were not the right Man on our side,

The Man of God’s own choosing:

Dost ask who that may be?

Christ Jesus, it is He;

Lord Sabaoth His Name,

From age to age the same,

And He must win the battle.

3. And though this world, with devils filled,

Should threaten to undo us,

We will not fear, for God hath willed

His truth to triumph through us:

The Prince of Darkness grim,

We tremble not for him;

His rage we can endure,

For lo! his doom is sure,

One little word shall fell him.

4. That word above all earthly powers,

No thanks to them, abideth;

The Spirit and the gifts are ours

Through Him who with us sideth:

Let goods and kindred go,

This mortal life also;

The body they may kill:

God’s truth abideth still,

His Kingdom is forever.

Romans 14

Christian Liberty

1. Love does not condemn (v1-12)

Principle 1: believers are not to judge one another on matters where the Bible gives no specific commands.

Romans 14:1 ESV [1] As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.

2. Love does not stumble others (v13-23)

Principle 2: love does not flaunt one’s liberty and cause a weaker believer to stumble

Romans 14:13 ESV [13] Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.

Romans 14:19 ESV [19] So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

Understanding the Times

Romans 13:8-14

Aim: Christians are to live in readiness for Christ’s imminent return

1. Christians Love God & Others (v8-10)

Highest good for those we love .. is for them to know Jesus Christ as Lord

Love subordinates self for others ... deny self for others

- fulfil God’s law

Principle 1: Loving others as Christ loves us distinguishes Christians from others.

2. Christians Live Holy Lives (v11-14)

Principle 2: Loving others as Christ loves us requires putting on Christ

Note: Christ must live in you before you can put him on

Not good enough to know Jesus

Are you trusting your good works to bing you to heaven?

Without Jesus you will fail!
